Ngāti Whakaue whānau are the foundation of our leadership

Nau mai, haere mai ki te kāinga matihiko o Te Komiti Nui o Ngāti Whakaue.

We are the rōpū entrusted with the significant responsibility of leading our iwi, ki uta ki tai,  through the Treaty Settlement journey. This mahi is grounded in the principle of making mokopuna decisions — choices that prioritise the well-being and prosperity of future generations.

Our role is to ensure that the claimants’ statements of claim,  voices, aspirations, and mana of Ngāti Whakaue are upheld and carried forward throughout this process. This journey is not just about settling past grievances—it is about creating a stronger, more prosperous future for our people, our whenua, and those yet to come.

Te Komiti Nui

Te Komiti Nui o Ngāti Whakaue is the mandated entity established in 2009 at a hui a Iwi o Ngāti Whakaue. It’s purpose is to engage with the Crown to negotiate a comprehensive Treaty Settlement for extant historical Claims for and on behalf of Ngāti Whakaue.

Ngāti Whakaue Settlement

Ngāti Whakaue has a rich heritage as a proud and independent iwi, fiercely defending rangātiratanga over our tribal estate, waterways and natural resources including the abundant geothermal ngāwhā, puia and wai in accordance with our tikanga.

Claims

Find out about historical and contemporary claims lodged by Ngāti Whakaue whānau and hapū in response to Crown breaches of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. These claims highlight significant injustices around land loss, resource use, Crown conduct, geothermal resources, and the Rotorua Township Agreement.
